22 February 2008Sheet goods is the collective term for plywood, particleboard, Medium Density Fiberboard, and any other product that has been pro
cessed into a sheet of uniform size and thickness. And of all the sheet goods now being manufactured, the most exciting is still relatively new and unknown.
How does one go about getting excited about plywood? Well, truthfully, it is probably something of an acquired taste, this waxing poetic over plywood, but if you’ve spent as many years of your life trying to protect the environment as I have, you might also become excited, and especially so if the wondrous should occur.
But come. Suppose a miracle. Suppose a manufacturing process for cutting spindly bamboo into thin strips, gluing these thin strips together into panels, sanding them flat, and then gluing these panels into plywood sheets that retain all the strength of bamboo, but that have now been transformed into 4′x8′ sheets in thicknesses ranging from ¼" to 2". And just to make it complete, let’s not use toxic formaldehyde glues; let’s use a glue that is environmentally friendly. With this material we can make anything from exotic bamboo jewelry boxes to exquisite bamboo bedroom furniture!
