Bamboo Fireplace Mantel Top

20 March 2008

Bamboo Mantle Top 2 A few weeks back I wrote about the new thick bamboo sheet material available from Totally Bamboo. Well, I completed and installed a mantel top job I did with the bamboo and here are a few pictures from it. The material is pretty darn heavy as you might imagine. This is 2” thick laminated bamboo.

I found that other than the weight the material was great to work with. It’s like having a thick board that is 30” wide x 96” long. So you can make all sorts of things out of it without having to glue up panels.

bamboo Mantle Top1 This material works a lot like solid wood, so you can put any sort of edge detailing you want on it. The mantel top and window sills I made have a 3/8" round-over.

It also finishes very nicely with either a water based acrylic or an oil/varnish. I personally prefer the acrylic for the durability.

Of course, I’m not sure that this type of material would work for anything that was not contemporary, but that’s what my clients seem to prefer anyway here in California.
