Decorative Specialties New Drawer Boxes
4 April 2008Dovetail drawer boxes
Dovetail drawer boxes offer the strongest box construction available while offering the beauty of interlocking “dovetail” joints. The durability of the corner construction makes dovetail boxes the top choice for custom kitchens, closets, bathrooms, entertainment centers, offices and furniture. These are as beautiful as they are strong!
Being a small professional shop owner it really isn’t cost effective to make your own dovetailed drawer boxes. By the time you sort through the pile of wood at the lumber yard, mill the wood to the right dimensions, sand all the parts, cut the dovetails, assemble the boxes, re-sand the boxes and finally finish the boxes you end up with a product that is way more expensive than what you can buy. So, most of us outsource these to other companies who specialize in this sort of thing.
One company I tend to use often is Decorative Specialties, or “Decore”. Decore makes doors, drawer fronts and drawer boxes. Previously Decore’s dovetailed drawer boxes only came in about two flavors – maple and oak. Nice boxes, but pretty run of the mill. Recently Decore has added about 24 wood species to their selection, and personally this has me pretty excited. Now if I’m doing a closet I can offer cedar drawer boxes. If I’m doing an office with Maple cabinets I can offer Walnut drawer boxes. Or how about an entertainment center with Mahogany or Brazilian Cherry drawer boxes? Now that is deluxe!
These items are only available to the trade, of course, but I wanted to share this with the general public, because I am excited about the possibility of being able to provide my customers with such a large variety of dovetailed drawer boxes at a price that makes it economically feasible for me to offer this line—and for my clients to purchase it.
This is outsourcing that is truly beneficial to everyone concerned.
By the way, one choice I would never make would be dovetailed plywood.
