“Make It One For My Baby”

Well, sir, I’ll tell you. Because I write most of the articles for this site, I am on a constant search for new material, and it’s been an education. The number and breadth of the items out there is really astounding. Europe in general, and Italy in particular, has any number of incredibly innovative products and designs, which we have featured on this site, and we expect to do more. I guess that’s the best part—seeing something mundane like a kitchen hood or stove top transformed into something spectacular. All in all, I have to say that writing these blogs has caused me to view kitchens and baths—and my own woodworking—in a different way. But every now and again I come across an item that just astounds me—and not always in a good way.

The iWave Cube bills itself as the smallest microwave ever built, and looking at it, it’s hard to argue with that assessment. Certainly, one feels safe in predicting that no one is ever going to build anything smaller! I cannot help wondering, though, why a microwave as small as this one was deemed necessary. Or useful.

It is shown here heating up a cup of coffee. That’s “a” cup, as in one only. And that’s all you’re heating with it, too, so don’t even ask! If it’s you and a buddy drinking coffee, it’s either two trips to the microwave or buy another microwave! They also bill it as being useful to heat towels in the bathroom, although my personal feeling is that a washcloth is about all this baby can handle.

I’m not sure if the iWave Cube is the most impractical item I ever saw or the second most impractical, but it does bring to mind the Sunbeam Coney Island Hot Dog Steamer, which was advertised on TV in 1977. The commercials showed a happy family (five or six kids, as I recall) gathered about the Hot Dog Steamer while it steamed one hot dog and one bun. One! I’m the oldest of five children, and I can just imagine my parents trying to keep the peace while each kid got a hot dog. Yeah, right! And then there’s seconds, because what kid is going to stop with one hot dog! Interestingly enough, though, you can still obtain this item on eBay. And it’s always advertised as having “never been used.” No kidding.

Well, Joseph, when I first heard about the iWave Cube I was in agreement with your assessment.  However, after reading a few reviews about this I think that it could actually be handy. I can see having one on an office desk or maybe even in a bedroom for heating up tea and such.  The hot dog steamer is something I have no use for.
