SPAS AND TUBS

“Only That Day Dawns to Which We Are Awake.”
The title for today’s blog is actually a quote from Henry David Thoreau, but I chose it because it really capsulizes a lot of what I have been trying to say in those blogs that centered, as does this one, on design. What we most want to do is to simply do something no one else has done. It’s a tough sale at times, because what we are lookin
g to do in bathroom design is to design rooms and pieces that have a purely functional purpose. And whenever you do that, the one thing that always comes to the forefront is this: It’s a bathroom; don’t make waves. Anything that has been done before will probably work just fine for the present project.
Not long ago I watched an installment of a TV series which touts itself as being on the cutting edge of design, but I frequently find it to be nothing of the sort. This particular program was on a couple who had purchased a loft and wanted help furnishing that huge, wall-less expanse. All the designer really did, though, was throw up some partitions and haul in a bunch of furniture that would have gone well in every average, run-of-the-mill studio apartment that ever was. I’m telling you, those are the times when I am glad that there’s nothing to throw at the TV!
What you do only sometimes depends on what you are able to do. A small bathroom hampers design—no one knows that better than I!—but whenever there is room for it, I believe the one thing a bathroom should be filled with is imagination. Diamond Spas is very much a case in point for this discussion.
Our curse of closet-sized bathrooms is at least mitigated by an over-sized back yard, into which I put a spa in its own building (go to Thinking About It for pictures). But there is no denying that the better course of action, had we but room for it, would have been to put the spa in the house. And if we could have popped for a spa such as those made by Diamond Spa, well, so much the better!
What I find particularly interesting about Diamond Spas, though, is not only where they have been with their designs, but where they are going, because these people will work with you to make a custom spa or bath of just about any size and configuration imaginable. And it is imagination that most makes us awake to any day that dawns.
