“Simply Unbelievable”

Looking at this bathroom design concept from Emme Design brought to mind Henry David Thoreau’s quote, about our lives being frittered away by detail. “Simplify, simplify, simplify,” he exhorted us.

clip_image004This particular bathroom design will do just that, I think, both simplify, and by so doing, make our lives a bit easier. A woman’s bathroom is, of course, somewhat different from a man’s and especially so if that man is damned near bald, but I find that I use very little of what is currently stored in my bathroom, and that, being the way of it, the question naturally arises, “Then why in the world do we have all of this storage space and counter space, and especially so, why do we have these things when they are something that is not particularly useful?”

And, as Thoreau surely would have pointed out, having some of those things makes for more work than is actually necessary in a day’s time. Looking at this sink that fills almost the entire cabinet on which it rests and the simple shelves above it brought to mind my own morning absolutions. I wash my face (takes longer for a bald man!), and in so doing a good deal of water is splashed around the countertop whicclip_image006h must be wiped up at the end of the morning ritual. Then I brush my teeth, shave, apply a little cologne and antiperspirant, and I’m ready to face the day. After I wipe up the water that always ends up all over the countertop.

“But alert and healthy natures remember that the sun rose clear,” Thoreau reminds us. Really, the solution to a bathroom countertop that is often splashed on is a large enough sink to permit the water to simply drain the water away without further ado. Really, if only a little is required, then only a little should be provided. Simplify.

And that brings us back to this bathroom design by Emme Design. A cutting-edge Italian company, Emme Design, has reduced bathroom design to its essentials and, in so doing, created a wonderful sense of flow in the way one part of the bathroom melds into the next. The whole of it is coordinated and brought together with natural wood, stone, and ceramics, along with glass walls that introduce light to every part of the bathroom. It’s a bathroom design that is a little less and a little more. Actually, it’s unbelievable. Because it’s simple.
