“Playoffs?”

neve-faucet-canali-4 If you spend any time poking around this site, you’ll learn that it is actually put together by two people, my partner Joe Dusel and myself, the other Joe who always signs himself Joseph. We don’t normally talk about the division of labor, but Joe Dusel is the web master, and I write the blogs, a fact I bring up only because of the topic of today’s blogs, namely faucets. I remember when we first started this venture and were kicking around things to write about for a blog site we knew would be centered on woodworking of some sort. Actually, we knew it would be cabinets and furniture, but the emphasis would be on items used in kitchens and bathrooms with only an occasional foray into other rooms. But what about the bathroom I asked him, and he rattled off a number of ideas, including faucets.

To tell you the truth, I felt like the former Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts, Jim Mora—the one they run in Coors Light commercials from time to time, the guy who’s asked about the possibility of his team making it to the play offs, and all he can do is sputter, “Playoffs? Don’t talk about — playoffs? You kidding me? Playoffs?” And the contemptuous incredulity with which he forms those words makes it pretty clear that he doesn’t think his team is going to make it to the playoffs. Boy, anymore if you did a doozie in front of a camera, you’re going to be doing that doozie on YouTube for the rest of your life.

But to return to the subject at hand, if you substitute faucets for playoffs, you have a pretty good idea about how I felt about my partner’s idea about using something that mundane for the subject of a blog.

Well, sir!

neve_orizzonti_tot_g That was then, and this is now, and now I have to tell you that I have come across some of the most innovative faucet designs I have ever seen, innovative enough that I really find myself wishing I had some permutation of other of them in by own bathrooms, simply because of the design possibilities. The Canali modular faucet from Neve that tops this blog is just one of many outrageously innovative designs from this Italian maker of all that is fine for kitchens and bathrooms in the way of what I used to think of as lowly items (he said with much chagrin). But with faucets, as it is with everything else, really, how pedestrian the end product is will always bear a direct relationship to the amount of innovation and enthusiasm with which you approach the design of it. And, man, the people who come up with the designs on this page must skip all the way to work!

The Canali faucet has wonderful design possibilities, both in the way it looks and in the amount of space it can save in a bathroom as small as our own. Quite frankly, we just drape the hand towels over the front of the sinks because there’s nowhere else to put them, and a separate hand towel rack would take up too much valuable counter space. And then along comes an idea like this one!

The other particularly slick idea they have, I thought, is the Neve Orizzonti, the faucet with the water coming out in a sort of sheet. It is another compact design that somehow transcends its size with both the innovation of its design and its utility. Looking at the picture of it, with the bar of soap at one end, it’s obvious that the faucet itself can be put to use in the cramped bathroom that is the way of it for so many of us.

As I write these lines the NBA Championship has finally ended, and we’re halfway through the baseball season. But if there were such a thing as playoffs for faucet manufacturers, I know who would get my vote.
