“Poetry in Motion”

The name of this website suggests discussions on both furniture and cabinetry, although the bulk of it has come to revolve around items for the kitchen and bathroom, mostly cabinetry. Nevertheless, furniture is a huge interest for both me and my partner Joe Dusel. Both of us have made some—he’s made more than I have—and both of us would like nothing better than doing that sort of thing for a living. Install a kitchen, as my partner often warns me, and you’re on the hook for just anything that goes wrong, and just about francoceccotti-credenza-tadao-1anything can. Drill into a pipe when you’re screwing a cabinet to the wall, and you’ve got all kinds of problems on your hands! But furniture, what could go wrong with furniture? The problem with furniture, though, is getting something original off the launching pad, which brings me to the subject of today’s blog.

The primary reason I don’t write about furniture very often is because very little of what is being done inspires me. What I’m looking for is something that is both organic and original, and that’s a tough bill to fill.

Well, sir!

Franco Ceccotti is a woodworker in Northern Italy who is doing some truly wonderful things with wood furniture these days. One of the pieces I particularly like from Francoceccotti is the Tadao credenza, which is a sideboard with two doors and two drawers for storage. It has a wonderful oval shape and is available in either cherry or walnut, with maple being used for the interior shelves.

Actually, for those with the skills for it, settees are almost iconic, because no piece quite stirs the imagination like the challenges this piece presents. It’s to be an intimate seating for two. And more. It is to be light and airy, to have an almost other-worldly aspect to it. And yet it must seat comfortably seat two people, and seat them safely. So the lightness of the piece is always tempered with the strength that is necessary to its construction, if we are not to have people crashing to the floor!

And then, just because he could, I suppose, Mr. Ceccotti has gone it one better by incorporating a tiny, but useful, table to both help separate the two seating areas, and add the convenience, and intimacy, of a place for one’s drinks—or, perchance, a space just big enough for a poet’s notepad. Although, truthfully, it looks to me like the poetry’s already been covered!
