Montegrappa Wood-burning Fireplaces 2 I’m not really sure what the story is with design in the United States, although I say that knowing that just a few weeks ago I was in the showroom of a local kitchen designer who is doing some of the most remarkable work I have ever seen. For those in this country who may take exception to my many visits to Europe as it were, all I can really say is that what inspires me is design and I go wherever that particular Muse happens to lead. But it does seem that it often takes me to Europe, and the reason is because of what I find when I go there. This is certainly a case in point.

In all fairness just about any kind of fireplace a body puts in his home is going to do wonderful things for the ambience. It is a fact that it’s not a particularly efficient way of heating a homeMontegrappa Wood-burning Fireplaces 5 (because something like 90% of the heat goes up the chimney), but there are ways around those inefficiencies; glass doors, and curved hollow tubes that channel more heat back into the room are two that immediately come to mind. And there are even those who assert that a wood burning fireplace is more environmentally sound  because it uses a renewable heating source, the wood, as opposed to heating a home with natural gas or, as we often do in California, electricity that is generated by burning that natural gas! Still, it is fair to say the primary reason for a fireplace is aesthetic. And fair, too, to say that once there’s a fire going in it, it’s probably going to be just fine, in the sense of introducing a glow into the room, both literally and figuratively.

But wouldn’t it just be slicker than slick to have a fireplace that was so well designed that it took your breath away? And with that I can turn to the subject of today’s blog. Caminetti Montegrappa is an Italian company that makes several lines of wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, all of which have wonderful lines, but they have really outdone themselves with their fireplaces.

Montegrappa Wood-burning Fireplaces 6 The Linea fireplace that tops this blog (I chose the picture that included the sleeping child just for the “ahhhh” moment) is an ultra-modern fixture that would be an instant focal point in a den, library or bedroom. I especially like the way the slightly pyramid shape complements the upward direction of its flame.

The only other fireplace I will cite by name is the Dinamico because it is such a glorious design with its flamed copper finish. And the sliding steel doors on either side, adorned with simple square cutouts, are truly wonderful because they add so much to the fireplace and, thus, the room in which it resides. Even when the fire is not in place the Dinamico-and all the other designs, really-add a lot to a home. I know, I know. You’re waiting for me to say that these designs are HOT, but I’m not going to do it. Wouldn’t be prudent.
