Bathroom Faucets by Savil

“As Good As It Gets”
People are probably going to reach out and slap me if I don’t stop talking about my small bathrooms, but the plain fact of it is that not all of us have a bathroom that could double as a putting green, and for those of us who have small bathrooms, doing something both innovative and fun is very much a challenge. Shower, toilet, and sink vanity in a five by nine foot space-do something with THAT, Mr. Designer! But all kidding aside now, what in the world do you do with a space that small? All I can think to do is to seek out items that are different, and yet functional, which brings us to the subject of today’s blog.
Savil is another Italian company that is making real inroads into design. Writing these blogs has been something of an education for me, not only in the things I have found online, but where I have found these things. I once heard a woman who traveled quite a bit say that “all the best designs are in Italy,” but I never really believed her until I started going there myself. Well, going there in a manner of speaking-Internet surfing, really. I suppose that’s a lot like TALKING about eating a hamburger!
You know, my wife and I occasionally fantasize about taking a trip to that country, visiting some of the many manufacturers I’ve been writing about, maybe even getting an occasional free glass of wine and maybe one of those home cooked dinners that people must be making in those glorious kitchens that I write about from time to time. Damn! Drooled on the keyboard again! But to return to the subject at hand, I have a small bathroom, and I would like to do something else with it.
And with that I found myself seriously investigating the products of Savil because they have some wonderful ideas about things as prosaic as bathroom faucets. I say prosaic because I’m thinking about what’s in my bathroom now. But, on the other hand, those drab faucets match the drab sinks they serve, so I guess they’re at least compatible! But if I change them out, what then? Could I do something else with the concept of providing water to the bathroom? Enter our Italian friends.
What first caught my eye, of course, is the colors they used in these faucets, but they also have wonderful shapes to them. And the faucet that looks like it folds flat to the wall does, in fact, fold flat to the wall! It actually swings out when it is needed and swings back in when it is not wanted. And suddenly, the drab becomes a conversation piece, just the sort of thing to rescue a drab bathroom from its enervating sameness.
And, finally, for those who may find this color scheme a bit bold, the same concepts are also available in stainless steel. Something for everyone. It doesn’t get any better than that.
