“Papa-Ooma-Mow-Mow”
Sans Soucie Art Glass Studios takes as their symbol a hummingbird, which is as apt a logo as I’ve seen in some time, because I’ve seen quite a few of these birds since moving to San Diego some twenty-seven years ago. Any bird, if you stop to think about it, has a certain wonder that attaches itself, simply because it can move through the air. And no matter how many times I’ve gone through the explanation of how such things are possible, it still seems to me a miracle. But hummingbirds hover like little helicopters, and their wings move so fast that they are a blur, and they have this way of hovering in front of a flower for a moment, then darting somewhere else, and doing it so quickly that, all kidding aside, if you blink, you miss it! All of which is to say that these birds, more than any other, are the true miracles awing, and that Sans Soucie Art Glass, as I said earlier, is well-served with such a symbol.
One of the things with glass that I find so fascinating is the obvious fragility of the medium. Even setting glass in a picture frame can expose one to a certain danger of breakage, but when you decide to work this glass, to melt it and shape it, or to sand blast it in any number of ways, you learn at once the rule of one-third breakage. But the other part of glass that fascinates is what can be done with the medium in the right hands. Although I suppose those who have to work in it may find this part a bit intimidating, because people don’t normally pay out good money to artists who travel well-trod ground. If you expect to succeed, you need to create things that never were. And then with glass, because it’s glass, you have to figure out how in the world you’re going to accomplish your design!
All of that, of course, is mere preface to the absolutely glorious designs of Sans Soucie Art Glass. In their hands the new bathroom design becomes ever so much more than that. How much you do with your bathroom is, in some measure, contingent upon the amount of space you have at your disposal, but only partially. Mostly, what is done with your bathroom, regardless of its size, is almost entirely a reflection of the creative imagination with which one approaches the challenge.
Some of the designs we’ve shown here are going to require a fair amount of space to work well. Others would fit into bathrooms as small as my own-and that’s dinky, man! But all of these designs have one thing in common: the creative imagination with which they were conceived and the glorious ambience they create in any room in which they reside. I began this with an ode to the hummingbird, and I’d like to end that way, because Sans Soucie Art Glass, like the miracle of flight that inspires them really is the word. Or is that, the bird is the word?
