Scan Stoves

“Worth a Thousand Words”
OK, I hate to get into the New Year on anything remotely close to a sour note, but there are these people that. well, the kind of people who have terrific ideas are to be admired, of course. But then there are the people that not only have terrific ideas, but then go on to made about a bazillion variations on the these good ideas, and do it so effortlessly that you just find yourself wanting to reach out and slap them, because how in the heck are you ever going to compete with anyone like that? But that, as I say, is the sour, grumpy old man outlook. The other way of looking at it, of course, is, with a kind of Eureka moment, to realize that, man, have you come to the right place! And with that we can talk about a little about a company that really is pretty much THE place to go to, as far as fireplace design is concerned.
Fireplaces are something I write about with some frequency in these blogs, because they bring so much to a home. But there are fireplaces, and then there are fireplaces. And, I have to tell you that Scan is one of those who really knows how to design a fireplace and/or wood burning stove, as the case may be, which I add because they do a little of both. And do it wonderfully well!
Also, the Scan DSA 5, which we’ve featured at the top of this blog, is one of the few Danish made stoves that are now available in the USA. But I have every confidence that we will see more and more of the Scan line, and European products in general, being made available in the USA for a couple of reasons: (1) a lot of those European products make a heck of a lot of sense, and (2) the globe is shrinking, as evidenced by the ease with which I “visit” Europe for blog topics. But as the word gets out, the product tends to follow. And why not? I mean, look at them!
These EPA exempt Scan stoves take 18″ long logs and will heat rooms up to 1800 square feet. Also, they have a 75% efficiency rating, which is important, because some 90% of the heat in a conventional fireplace goes right up the chimney!
The other line I wanted to talk about is the Scan 58 Series, which consists of a range of wood burning stoves built around an elliptic burn chamber. These are some truly wonderful designs that have been designed with what can only be described as a relentless focus on user advantages and details, special emphasis on details, as it should be. Any woodworker worth his salt knows the line, “God is in the details.” What I particularly like about these elliptic stoves, though, is that they provide a glorious view of the fire, which, really, is one of the main advantages of the Scan lines. It’s tempting to say more, but, hey, that’s why I post so many pictures!
