“Double Down”
We talk a lot these days about the idea of cocooning at home. Truthfully, with the news the way it so often is, I’m surprised we’re not all at home under the covers, rolled up into a fetal position, whimpering a bit! But, even so, with the economy what it is, people are beginning to learn how to cocoon, to spend a little more time with each other. Instead of constantly spending money to be entertained, people are learning the gentle art of conversation, of how to simply be with each other for an afternoon or a day. It’s much cheaper, really, and in the long run, much more rewarding. Well, if that’s the sort of thing that is beginning to appeal to you, man do I have an idea I’d like to introduce you to!
Cocon Center is a Dutch company, which accounts for the different spelling of cocoon, but it is very much a concept they have embraced. Actually, the Cocon they’ve come up with is something that really invites the user to embrace-either others or the simple loveliness of being alone with a book or favorite CD on a warm summer afternoon. It’s a garden cocoon with wheels that is designed to be used out of doors pretty much wherever the spirit moves you to, uh, move it! What’s cool about it, though, is that because it’s on wheels and is self-contained, it is simplicity itself to simply move it away from the sun whenever it intrudes, or away from a harsh wind, for that matter.
The Cocon comes in three sizes to comfortably seat one, two, or three, although the largest size makes a wonderful two-seater for those who would like the extra room. All three models are made of mahogany and are equipped with special curved leg supports, which make the Cocon all the more inviting for lounging. When they’re not in use, they can be neatly tucked away in storage space under the seating. The back is also easily adjustable from an upright sitting position to a reclining position to relax, although the whole concept itself is really all about relaxation.
The other thing that is particularly attractive about the Cocon is the available accessories. There’s a folding table that comes in various sizes, depending on the size of the unit itself, but which is big enough for a drink, a book, a laptop computer, even an intimate picnic lunch or dinner. They have also included pockets in the sides of the unit for both newspaper and mobile phones.
One of the things I think we have most lost in this computerized, hurry, hurry, hurry world is the simple art of conversation. So many of the young people these days are so scared they will be bored that everywhere they go, they take computerized games and texting devices (how anyone can spend hours typing with his flippin’ THUMBS is beyond me-but I digress!), all the while ignoring the people they are actually with.
But, really, when you think about it, isn’t the most delightful times of all the times when you and a friend or two got in a squirrely mood and laughed ’til the tears ran down your cheeks? And if, perchance, you’ve been as happily married as I am for as many years as I have been, then you know full well the simple joy of simply being with each other, not always speaking, because sometimes it’s enough just to be. But if these simple joys have escaped you, perhaps something like the Cocon might be just the thing to expand your horizons, whilst you snuggle down in your own private cocoon. And if you share the joy, it doubles.
