“It’s My Party”

Electrolux Island Barbecue 4 One of the grandest days I ever had was when my wife invited a number of her business friends to our home for the first time, and I got a chance to show off my back yard paradise. (You can check it out at Thinking About It, if you’re interested.) The menu was my favorite one-hamburgers, hot dogs, and brews. I know, I know, that is such a pedestrian menu, right? But, for me. well, I kid about it a lot in these blogs, but my honest to god favorite meal is a cheeseburger and a beer, heavy on the mayonnaise, and keep the beer in ice. But to get back to the subject at hand, the one thing that put a crimp in the evening was the charcoal barbecue I used, which was away from the festivities on the gazebo, so a lot of that evening was lost to me because of my cooking duties.

Well, that, as they say, was then, and this is now, and now is the time to tell you about one of the slicker barbecue concepts I have come across, namely the new Island Barbecue from Electrolux. What it means is that the days of barbecuing in a cloud of smoke with your back turned to your guests, or worse, as it was fElectrolux Island Barbecue 3or me, in a different part of the yard altogether, well, those days are gone, my friend. The Electrolux barbecue comes in two sizes, two-burner and the four-burner EGL 9000X Island Barbecue which is the one I wanted to talk about, because why not, right? But what I find particularly cool about these barbecues is that they have been designed to make them very much the heart of the yard, not just a place where hubby goes off by himself and gets covered with smoke, grease, and small burns on his hands and arms.

What’s cool about the Electrolux Barbecue Island, though, is that it has been designed to be a place where people congregate to converse with the cook. It includes a teak wood bar which surrounds the two ends and the rear of the Island and provides ample space for food preparation and dining, as well as a place for setting down cooking utensils and drinks. But the other slick thing is that it comes with tElectrolux Island Barbecue 5wo insulated cooling drawers (one of which accommodates ice) that keep food and drinks freshly chilled and within easy reach. You can even store as many as fifteen standing wine bottles, although I’m not sure who would be standing after an evening like that!

There’s a stainless steel grill cover that can be slid backwards to lock into place automatically, and when you do, you’ll see that the Island Barbecue has three cooking surfaces made of solid cast-iron to cater to a variety of foods:

- open griddles, ideal for everyday grilling of meats such as steak

- closed griddle to prevent greasier foods from dripping on the burners

- flat teppanyaki for stir-frying vegetables, cooking sauces, pasta or rice

They have also included everything you’ll need to barbecue shish-kabobs, and with the combination of two grills and two grill plates, you can cook bratwurst, vegetables and shrimp on the grill at the same time. And hamburgers, right, because it’s my party, and I’ll fry if I want to.

I was quite happy with my compact grill until now. I think I would have to ask for this Barbecue Island as birthday gift from my wife. She’s been asking me what I want and frankly I can’t think of anything that I really really want until now!

Stay tuned, good buddy. Me and the barbecue got a thing goin’ on. I’ve reviewed quite a few of them in the past and expect to review a lot more in the future, especially now that winter is finally giving its last gasp.
