“Make It Easy on Yourself”

Ceramishe Refin 1 I am sometimes tempted to say that any tile will enliven up any room in which it resides, but that is manifestly not true, a fact I know full well because there is tile in both my kitchen and bathrooms, and those rooms are drab. It’s because they are part of a tract home and were installed by the original building builder of this home, work he did as cheaply as he could and still provide a home that would actually remain standing. But the other thing he did was make of this a home that would appeal to the widest possible market, because he wanted to sell it quickly.

And that, in turn, is why I am so insistent that those who remodel their homes ought not to consider the resale market unless they know absolutely that their work will take them to another city in two or three years. In which case one ought really to consider foregoing the remodeling altogether, because, face it folks, you are not going to get that money back. But I digress. I started out to say that those who remodel should put aside all thoughts of the resale value and simply design their homes to suit themselves. And when they do, all kinds of things present themselves.

Ceramishe Refin 6 And that brings us to Ceramishe Refin and the rather bold tile in the picture at the top of this blog. It caught my eye because of its boldness, which caused me to visit their website, and, in turn, to discover a really wonderful company. Ceramishe Refin has been in international markets since 1962, but is still 100% made in Italy, which is about all the innovation assurance I need. They have given themselves a wonderful mission, nothing less than offering people the world over premium quality ceramic products of Italian design.

I visited their site because of their boldness, but I found myself sticking around quite a bit because of the quality of both design and manufacture. Ceramishe Refin is a company that respects ethical principles and is committed to the natural environment in which we live, which in view of the ecological catastrophe now taking place in the Gulf of Mexico is something to think about. But, in the end, it is still the tile designs themselves that will make us want to buy or not buy their product, and I would say that Ceramishe Refin is on very firm ground there. In the end, though, they can only design and manufacture their tile. They cannot give you the necessary courage to avail yourself of what they have created.

Ceramishe Refin 11 I am particularly taken by the section of tile in the living room we show here, simply because it is both an unexpected use of ceramic tile and one that, upon further reflection, strikes me as being right as rain. And that, in turn, brings us back to your own tile dilemma, for those who are somewhat resistant to what I have proposed here.

Will the new owner, that faceless ogre that seems to inhibit every innovative remodeling concept, approve of what you do? Perhaps not. And so what, really? When we moved into our home, the first thing I did was remove a huge wall section of gold-veined mirror tiles in the living room. It was the sort of thing that appeals only to the very young, and that young a very long time ago-think hippy yippy 1960s. No doubt those who owned the home before we did found it rather slick, and perhaps for them it was. But I do think they were right to do it, just as I felt right in removing it and making plans for my own flights of fancy. If people like the house, they will buy it and simply remove those items that tend not to please them. There, that’s easy enough.
