“All Right”

Arturo Alvarez Guau Wall Lamp 2 One of the things that has changed quite a bit for me over the years is lighting, and by that I really mean more the use to which I put said lighting. I am still the voracious reader I have been all my life, but in the beginning years, to me a lamp was for reading, and I tended to think of it in only that connection, to a point where I used to make some hideous choices for lighting, if only the fixture would take a bulb sufficiently large enough for reading purposes. Although, in a sense I suppose we all tend to look back on the fashion choices we made a few decades ago and cringe a bit. I remember a lamp my wife. wow, that was close! No, no, nothing about the wife’s choices-just mine! But to bring this back where I started, not all lighting has to be for any one purpose, and when you begin to think in those terms, you open up all sorts of possibilities for lighting.

Mood lighting, task lighting, reading light for reading, and the like, even the lighting that I use as I’m sitting at this computer. Those in the know are most insistent that a computer screen not be the only light in the room. Your eyes will thank you if you have other lamps lit as you do your computer work. But all that is by the bye and drifting off the subject to some extent.

Arturo Alvarez Guau Wall Lamp 3 What I really wanted to do was talk about Arturo Alvarez lighting, because the moment I saw these sconces I was intrigued. At night my wife almost always retires to our master bedroom because there’s a magnificent eight-foot-tall walnut entertainment center (OK, I’m biased; I built it myself!), and she loves the open back door and ceiling fan in the summer months and snuggling under the covers in the winter months, a TV place all her own. And for once she gets total control of the remote! But to get the lighting in that room just right for TV watching, she uses lamps in the adjacent sitting room.

With something like these lamps, though, she could, were she so inclined, put them on the wall in the bedroom itself and have just the thing for her TV watching. What I find especially appealing about them is that not only can they be used as is, but they can be adjusted to make the lighting more intense or more subdued, or even different hued! It means that with just a bit of fiddling she would end up with exactly the right ambient lighting for TV watching. That and a football game would do it for me-but in that room it’s her show!

Arturo Alvarez Guau Wall Lamp 4 But to get this back to the subject, Arturo Alvarez is a Spanish lighting company whose products are available throughout Europe and much of the world, including, I’m happy to say, the USA. They design and manufacture what they call Emotional Light, although I tend to think of it as eminently functional, because of the many ways in which it can be adjusted to give exactly what is wanted for a room. One of their more interesting creations is the mood lamp we feature here, the Guau. It’s available in a metal white-painted finish, and it features a flat adjustable shade that can moved and rotated in a multitude of positions to focus the light where it is wanted. This lamp itself can also be mounted to the ceiling, and it is available in two sizes. Finally, the bulbs themselves come in several colors, to help set the ambience just so, from intimate boudoir to movie night, to beer and a game. It’s all good, and all lit exactly right.

Interesting, but when I saw the first picture in the post I thought of El Mo. That was of course then backed up by the video on their web site.
