“A Bit Out of the Ordinary”

Hastings Tile & Bath 2 Some of the most elegant bathroom designs now going around are from Europe, which is why they are so often the subjects of my various blogs on this subject. The problem, of course, is that there is a real difficulty in getting those products to the USA, although I have heard, and fervently believe, that it can be done. The better course of action for those who are desirous for some of those products, though, would clearly be to avail themselves of the services of some kind of firm that imports products from Europe. Doing so would put all of the burden of customs, shipping, currency variations, and the like on the shoulders of the import company, leaving the purchaser with not much more to do than to simply purchase the product, same as one would with any other product one obtains in the USA. And with that I can introduce you to yet another company I have discovered in the great expanses of the Internet, namely Hastings Tile & Bath.

Hastings Tile & Bath has actually been in the New York area since 1885, originally as a manufacturer of paving installations. In the 1970s they decided to diversify their product range by taking advantage of a rapidly growing American interest in European design. They created the Hastings Tile and Bath Collection, a venture that has done so well for them that they sold the paving business in 2000 and turned their full attention to further developing the tile and bath business, which I must say they have done to a fare thee well. What first caught my eye was their bath collection, so I will focus on that today and leave the tile to another day.

066 The double sink and vanity at the top of this blog is all the argument anyone should need for the appeal of Italian design. It has a wonderful grace about it, while doing something altogether different. Hastings Tile & Bath has a number of products that have been produced in the Deruta region of Italy, which is another of those parts of this earth that just screams creativity. If you spend as much time online with this research as I do, you find yourself looking at lots and lots of pictures of various regions of Italy, very much with your nose pressed up against the window glass. It is an incredibly beautiful country, and the work that comes out of it very much reflects that. But I digress.

I started to tell you about some of the products Hastings Tile & Bath has imported from the Deruta region of Italy: Ceradur basins and tops that are available in several finishes and complemented by a number of furniture options as well, some of which we feature here. Ceradur is a technical ceramic material which is both highly resistant to shock and capable of a greater range of textures.

Hastings Tile & Bath 1 Hastings Tile & Bath has also worked hard to import a number of items with a wondrous grace, as demonstrated by the elegant silver-colored sink we show here. And that brings me to the blue glass vessel sink. It’s a Cenedese Glass Sink from Murano, Italy, which I’m told is the home of glass making in Venice. These people have been at it some seven hundred years now, and it shows, because they’ve gotten might good at it! All kidding aside, it’s a sink that is more than a place to wash up. It’s a work of art, and like any work of art, it is sure to be a joy forever.

Finally, I should point out that Hastings Tile & Bath is more than just a New York-based business. They have showrooms and outlets all over the United States, which is good news indeed for those of us who would like to do something a bit out of the ordinary with our bathroom renovations.
