“What It Is”

Lasa Idea Bathroom Designs 1 One of the more overworked words in the English language is surely genius, and especially this is so in the arts. I’m something of a curmudgeon when it comes to that subject, but for the last few decades it does seem to me that a great many people who are, at best, mildly talented are being heralded as genius. Whenever I think of that word, I think back to what a music appreciation teacher showed us many years ago when he introduced us to a piece by Mozart, which was nothing but a simple set of variations on the children’s song “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” I say simple only because the song itself is simple, but in Mozart’s hands it became nothing less than a tour de force. After the piece had finished, our teacher said, “You get the feeling Mozart could have kept that up all night long, variation after variation.” That’s genius.

I bring that up, though, because a lot of what I find in Northern Italy these days strikes me as more of the same kind of genius, a certain mindset that can effortlessly produce variation after variation on a theme, and each entirely different from all that have preceded it. Our case in point is Lasa Idea. One of the things I have often suggested for bathroom remodelings is a vessel sink because they can be a most unexpected and stylish treat. Well, as it turns out Lasa Idea has come up with a very elegant take on that very bathroom item and put it into a vanity small enough to fit into the cracker box I call a bathroomLasa Idea Bathroom Designs 4. Depending on one’s needs, a vanity this small may well provide all the storage space that is needed, but what I like about this is the grace with which the sink has been joined with the vanity. Simple elegance, my wife would call it, and she’d be right.

But, as we all know, one size does not fit all. My blogging partner wants all the storage space he can get, which brings us to the second picture in this blog. Same company, entirely different concept of a bathroom design. Again, I find myself applauding the innovation with which they have approached this theme, but for those who would like something other than a standard undermount sink, Lasa Idea can accommodate them as well. The third picture shows yet another variation, and interesting enough, it’s a variation on the second. Both of the latter two sinks are in Lasa Idea’s IKS line, but at first blush it may not appear so. It’s because of the wide range of this motif. The base units in the IKS Collection can be completed with marble tops or glass or wood, and the sinks can be undermount or integral, and they can be matched with the many mirrors in the Lasa Idea Catalog.

And there is, as they say in late night TV ads, more. A lot more. Lasa Idea has created a total of five variations on this particular bathroom design motif in their IKS line. The IKS design motif itself, however, is but one of fifteen motifs they show on their site, and each of these has an incredible number of variations, totaling several hundred in all. And that’s just as of this morning. By tonight or tomorrow, they may well have come up with a dozen more. What that is, is genius, man. Everything else is talent.
