Year End Blog 2011

23 December 2011

To Every Time 3

“To Every Thing There Is a Season”

To Every Time 2 This will be the last blog for this year, as I would like to take some time off from the writing of these blogs. This year I will actually take off several weeks, as the holidays fall on the weekend this year, and weekends are becoming the time I now have for writing blogs on all things kitchen and bath.

In years past I have used the year end blog as a chance to sum up the year that has gone before, and this year will be no different. But even as I say that I know that this year has been profoundly different from those that have gone before.

My wife’s mother passed on August 19thof this year, and even though we try to tell each other that we’re not the first to have a death in the family, still, this one seems particularly difficult to accept. In point of fact, I have buried almost half my family, both parents and a younger brother, but this one has been the most difficult loss of all. Those who know me, or who have to come to know me a bit from what I have posted online, know how very happy I am with my wife of 35 years. All I can say is that the apple did not fall far from the tree. My mother-in-law was a beautiful person, and I loved her very much.

The other aspect of a death that hits that close to home, I suppose, is the introspection that sometimes follows upon it. In my own case, I have come to do some thinking about my own workload and about the things I consider important. My blogging partner and I have both put an incredible amount of work into this venture, and still feel that success is just around the corner, as they say. Even so, in the coming year I mean to not write as much as I have. I will be cutting back my work load to three blogs a week. I will also be changing a bit of what I write about, as with the time thus saved, I mean to put forward a huge push on finishing a most ambitious remodeling of our home.

To Every Time 5 We have been in this house since November of 1992 and have loved it from the beginning. But a large part of this home we love is still just a glimmer in my eye. Our backyard is long since built out, as is this study and our master bedroom. But we still have a kitchen, two baths, a family room, and an office for my wife to build, projects I mean to accomplish in the next two years. As the weeks go by, I hope to be able to share pictures of finished projects for our home. I also hope to solicit comments and observations on future plans from our readers.

However, despite the focus of my attentions on woodworking, I did want to emphasize that we are not going to turn this blog into a do-it-yourself blog, as there are a number of excellent ones already on the internet. Instead, we will continue with our emphasis on products and designs for kitchens and baths and other rooms of the house. One of the things I am particularly looking forward to this year, though, is to finally utilize some of the many products I have been writing about these last few years. Formica and Karran Sinks immediately come to mind, but so, too, do some of the many glorious tiles I have written about these last few years.

So, at this time I would like to thank our many readers, whoever they may have been these last few years, and to ensure you all that, despite this year end vacation, that we will be back the week of January 9, 2012 with a great many new projects and ideas to share with you, up to and including a kitchen designer from Down Under who has designed and installed kitchens in my own California. From our home to yours, then, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
